My Professional Life
I started my professional life with an intense love of design. I started early in my years while I was just a small child. I made simple little rag rabbits. They were just short lengths of old sheets that I tied into a knot on one end to form a head. Then I cut the upper shorter end in half to make ears. Sounds pretty weird typing it out but I was a young child. Then I made clothes from colorful pieces of fabric that were left over from sewing projects. I really used my imagination on those high fashion rag rabbits.
A bit later on when I had better drawing skills, I drew my own paper dolls. Now the reason for this was to do away with the bathing suit straps that were on commercial paper dolls. Those straps got in the way of designing those paper dolls wonderful strapless evening gowns. Of course, I designed more that evening gowns. My little creations had extensive and wonderful wardrobes.
I left those little paper dolls behind and started creating and sewing my own wardrobes. My closet was truly stuffed with clothes. I took classes to master tailoring my own suits. Eventually I grew weary of spending so much time alone in my sewing room.
My creative nature turned to interiors. It was fun and it was easy to change a drab old room into a wonderful colorful creation. Of course I did some serious studying to learn more about interior design but it came so easy. I was just designing for myself until my friends started asking me to do their homes. For many years I did all my friends homes and mine.
At this point, with lots of friends to entertain, I started doing dinner parties. Just another part of the elegant home thing. Gave me a reason for dressing up the dining area and pulling together large elegant dinners. Not only was the food a designer creation but so was the table it was served on. This went from dinners to great Christmas parties. Those were great times. I met my husband during this period.
Then my house flooded and that was an opportunity to change the whole interior. My husband is a structural engineer and very very good at building and remodeling. I had already had one of the bedrooms removed to make my living area larger before I met him and I certainly had the courage to implement the other changes I wanted in the interior of that house. After all the interior of the house was already a wreck. We tore out the kitchen and I designed a new better one. The master bath was totally redesigned. From a horrid badly designed space the master bath became a wonderful spa. The whole house was like a caterpillar turning into a butterfly. I loved that house but I sold it and we built a bigger one out in Cypress, TX. One with a huge backyard where I could design a large more formal garden. That same garden we sit in on nice morning and have coffee.
I stared my design business EDesigns Custom Interiors in 2004. My mentor and friend Ester Smith, a wonderful designer, encouraged me in my new venture. My business became a success and I have had the privilege to work with some wonderful homeowners.
In 2009 myself and a small group of interior designers formed the Interior Design Society (IDS) Houston Chapter. The IDS is a national organization 40,000 strong with many chapters throughout the nation. Houston at that time just didn't have one. I was voted founding president for the 2009-2010 term. It has been a wonderful experience getting to know all the members of IDS Houston and working to grow our chapter. Check us out at www.idshouston.org See what IDS Houston is doing. This year 2010 IDS Houston joined the Greater Houston Builders Association which will offer many more opportunities to grow.
